In an unprecedented crisis, I think development engineers involved in new product development are immersed in the turmoil of what & How they shall do. COVID-19, which began in early 2019, has quickly encompassed the world and has had a life-threatening impact.

We all know that even in such a catastrophic situation, if we do not solemnly proceed with new product development, corporate management will not be able to continue. Then, what kind of method is there to overcome the problematic situation and proceed with new product development? I would say that it is to move away from the shackles of the name ISO once, then visualise the path toward the goal of new product development and perform a quantitative risk assessment. In other words, it’s all about getting back to the original Front-End Loading of new product development.

For about 40 years after the collapse of the bubble economy, we may say that the original DNA of new product development, which was Japan’s strength, has been brilliantly destroyed by the advent of ISO. However, keep regretting the past would be no solution.

In light of this, rethink the Front-End Loading of pure new product development may give us the freshness of growth once again.
